Ideas for a saturated area- landscape?
Question by Mary B: Ideas for a saturated area- landscape?
I’d like some ideas on how to landscape an area that stays saturated. I wasted time and money not realizing how wet the area stayed until I bought flowers and went to plant them- I foolishly planted them anyway. I’m just a beginner. They grew until it rained the first time and then they quickly drowned. By then, I’d put hours into it and was quite upset.
Local stores aren’t much help as they mostly employ teenagers now who know nothing of plants. The only thing I dislike is shrubs. I’m not looking for a long, drawn-out plan…just some plant ideas that look pretty or flowers would be even better. Also, can anyone suggest a website where a beginner could learn about gardening? My only prior experience is a tomato plant I killed about 10 years ago. I really need help!
Thank you!
I’m sorry I should have added I live in a community where I can’t plant any trees. I can only landscape my area with small shrubs, flowers, etc.
My apologies for not stating that earlier.
I live in the eastern part of Va. The soil drains poorly where this building is sitting- at the bottom of a small slope. My building is the only one with soil like this that I can tell by observing. It’s so bad, crayfish dig holes in my small yard but in no other yard.
Thank you for the responses and the links. I’m determined to have a pretty yard one way or another. I’d like to avoid the expense of hiring someone, if possible.

Many landscape architects still draw freehand, so strong arm muscles and pecs are useful.

Would I need a landscape permit to install a new landscape design on a commercial property?
Question by JS: Would I need a landscape permit to install a new landscape design on a commercial property?
The construction company I am working with already has a permit to work on the property and all I am doing is beautifying the property by adding flowers, ornamental trees, planters and grass. I have to provide my bid and I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row. Does anyone have any info on this, or know where I could find info on this?

It depends on where you live. Here in New Orleans you do not need another permit, only what the company you are subbing from wants from you, eg. insurance, workers comp.

Architect: Handle design aspects, and any big project will have at lest one to sign off on the plans. This is because they have a formal education. They tend to work for a design firm, and pay wise they typically get more then the other groups.
Designer: Also handles design aspects. Education ranges from little(enough to produce plans) to not quite an architect. They typically work for a contractor, under an architect at a firm, or freelance. Pay can range from meh to descent. (these are the people that have caused thousands to slave at keeping plants ill-suited for a climate alive in it.)
Contractor: The people that make the design happen. Lest required education as only the on site boss needs to know how to read the plans, and explain it to the workers. Also has the lowest pay as the lowest bid gets the contract in most cases.

Any places in and around London to get good landscape pictures?
Question by bruvvamoff: Any places in and around London to get good landscape pictures?
I should add, I live in a boring village outside of London. I never saw it as a picturesque place until I got into photography. Its not like I’m walking around London going ‘ooh this is boring’
Graveyards are interesting but I always feel a bit disrespectful.

Anywhere. Everywhere. Open your eyes and look. The Embankment at dawn. Hampstead Heath. Kensal Green Cemetery. Any of the great parks. Good grief, man, if you can’t see good landscape photographs in one of the World’s greatest cities there’s no hope for you.
