Q&A: What is the difference between a Landscape Architect and a Garden Designer?
Question by Betty I: What is the difference between a Landscape Architect and a Garden Designer?
My boyfriend wants to start his own landscaping business like his father did but he doesn’t know which is better… What type of schooling does each require and licenses? Thanks!

Answer by ?
A landscape architect has 5 years of college in Landscape Architecture and has passed a rigorous several day exam to get a license. Anyone can call themselves a a garden designer. If your boyfriend wants to install plant material, he will probably need a landscape contractors license or horticulture license, both administered by the state and so easy to pass, a second grader could do it.
Landscape Architects can draw and sell plans. No one else can. Landscape Architects are not only designers, but also engineers.

Well this is one of those questions where the answer has to be a bit vague…
A landscape designer is someone that generally only works with plants and ‘softscaping’ only theoretically designing or including structures such as walls and pathways. A designer can provide you with a quite complex landscape plan.
A landscape architect is more inclined to include very detailed information on the ‘hardscaping’ specifying details about the structure of a wall or paving. An architect will provide a highly detailed landscape plan drawn to scale & including specification etc.
Add to this a landscape engineer who will add construction detail & absolute specifications (e.g. – pier holes to be 300mm wide by 500mm deep with 100mm bed of 20mm clean drainage aggregate in the base etc etc)
Soooo… a landscape designer may well be a landscape architect & vice versa.
It could also be said that all landscape architects are landscape designers but not all designers are architects…
Hope this helps

Question by Pete: landscape architect?
I don’t have the money right now, but would it be ok if contacted a landscape architect to see how much I would be looking for? Or should I wait till I KNOW I have the money to get what I am looking for? I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, but I am dying to know how much a patio, outdoor kitchen, and screen enclosure is going to run me! Thanks.

I would suggest that you seek 2 or 3 bids from landscape contractors recommended to you by others, no harm in that. But I would also be up front about that fact that you will not be starting for awhile, and are saving up the money. You are setting your goals and dreaming about bettering your world and that is to be commended. Good luck!

Question by charlie: A landscape architect plans to enclose a 3000 square foot rectangular region in a botanical garden. she will..?
A landscape architect plans to enclose a 3000 square foot rectangular region in a botanical garden. she will use shrubs costing $ 45 per foot along 3 sides and fencing costing $ 20 per foot along the fourth side. find the minimum total cost?? and verify that your answer is correct by using the appropriate derivative test??? thanks much!
Best answer:
Answer by billrussell42
let x and y be the sides of the rectangle, with y being the side with the fencing.
Area = 3000 = xy
Cost = 45(2x+y) + 20y
C = 90x + 45y + 20y
C = 90x + 65y
y = 3000/x
C = 90x + 65(3000/x)
C = 90x + 195000/x
we want to minimize the cost, so take derivitive and set equal to 0
C’ = 0 = 90 – 195000/x²
90x² = 195000
x = 46.55 ft
y = 64.45 ft

For one Chief Architect is something like 2 grand. If you aren’t an Architect with a specific purpose for having Chief then I would stick with a consumer level product like the Better Homes one you mentioned.
