why garden?

Sometimes people don’t see much in gardening. They may dislike the idea of controlling nature, they may find beauty in the wild, or in man-made things, or in the random litter of our culture. I don’t deny the validity of all this.
The climax vegetation of a particular piece of pristine land can be very diverse. The beauty of the study of ecology for me is to understand how the land expresses itself in life forms. From the first pioneer colonisations (of a volcanic island, the rock revealed as an ice sheet retreats, land reclaimed from the sea) complexity increases within the capacity of the land until the complex and stable state is reached. Human monocultures reduce complexity to a dangerous level. Stability is found in diversity.
So what of a garden? Our plot would be an oak woodland if left to itself. This would be very fine, I could sit there and read and think and watch the insects crawl and the leaves bud and fall. But if I garden I can take exercise, grow food, encourage more wildlife and cultivate other plant forms from elsewhere in the world. I can create other ecosystems such as ponds and walls and all kinds of edges where life is rich. In short, I think gardening is a valid cultural activity, which increases the diversity of the land, and is therefore richer to contemplate and a source of wider thought. It need not result in deserts of boring bedding plants, and an oversimplification and over-ordering of the potential. I am a human being and inevitably I am going to change my environment by my activity. But I don’t have to deform and poison it. I can work with the natural potential of the land to increase its ‘meaning’. Sensitively managed, a garden is a harmless and beautiful thing. You’d have to sit in our garden to realise the way of it.
