I live and garden in the desert Southwest. I’ve learned how to garden around killer hot summers and super alkaline soil. So, far the places I visit most are the Garden Web Arizona forum and the University of Arizona agricultural sites. What about you? Where do you learn about growing herbs and veggies?

I think a plant/nursery catalog company would be your best source. They have package plans for the entire ecosystem to sustain the plants as well as the insects.

Question by Incognito: Any organic gardeners out there ever have to deal with squash bugs?
Any organic gardeners out there ever have to deal with squash bugs? What did you do besides drop to your knees and cry? I’ve been out there squishing them every morning. But, I’ve already lost half my crop.

When they are bad, I fall back to using a light Rotenone dusting. It’s one of the few pesticides that can be used in organic gardening. It’s derived from a plant hormone. Low bee toxicity, but high fish toxicitiy – so don’t use it near ponds. It breaks down and biodegrades in the soil after a rain.

google the terms “horticultural therapy” and you’ll find links such as http://www.htinstitute.org/ They have a downloadable PDF focused on “Discussion focused on therapeutic healthcare gardens that are designed for treatment purposes (HT) and the need for research to build a body of knowledge about effective design. The handout (Creating Outdoor Environments for Healing: Program Design Components, Process, Research and Evaluation)for our session can be downloaded here as a PDF.”
Horticultural therapy is the study of use in landscaping to foster well-being, and is regularly included in landscape design of commercial and common spaces.

How do you create a simple backyard design?
Question by ninja level 7: How do you create a simple backyard design?
so I’m trying to come up with a simple low maintenance design in my backyard but I’m not sure what to do anyone got any suggestions?

Answer by loves christmas lights
Post a pic!! Its a really good idea to go up to a nursery and find out which plants are low maintance and dont need to many specifics and are for your weather too. I like plants with long thin leaves. Planters in the 2 back corners that are surrounded by stones, thers just too many possibilities without seeing your yard, knowing your budget and how much work you want to put into it. Also depending on your area and likes, is it foresty there, desert, coastal, plains?

Answer by n2o_9999
I suppose that the most obvious answer is that it takes a lot less room for those with limited garden space. I actually saw a brilliant product the other day called the ‘PatioGro’. It’s basically a stack of planters to enable you to plant vegetables in a small space even if it is concentrated.
